It is important at this point to understand that this subject is far to extensive to cover in one or two web pages, however I will endeavor to explain the basics and trust that this will encourage you to seek further and more in depth information. The marks struck on imported items differ from those articles made in the UK. In general terms and to make things fairly straight forward and brief , for items made in the UK:- The Standard marks struck on Sterling Silver are the Lion Passant, the date letter mark, the makers mark and the assay office mark. The standard marks struck on Gold are the Crown, the date letter mark, the makers mark and the assay office mark. In addition to these marks you will at times also see the Monarchs Head mark. |
