With the case open, and the dust cap removed, this beautiful Verge movement can be seen in all its glory. The very high standard of the finely engraved and silvered regulation dial is just one indication of the extremely high quality of this wonderful timepiece, another is the higher number of spokes used on all the wheels. The high degree of surface finish to the wheels, escapement and plates is also clear evidence of the amount of time and care taken in the production of this outstanding Georgian Pocket Watch. So too is the construction and finish to the internal dust cover. Lesser watches of the period lack the preciseness and fine finish to the form and bevel of the half moon regulation aperture. However, held in place by a screwed Chaton, the most noticeable and impressive feature indicating the high grade and quality, is the huge Rose cut Diamond End Stone, capping the balance staff. Again unlike lesser grade timepieces this feature is repeated under the dial.

A traditional "watch paper" of a later Victorian watchmaker, responsible at one time for a service or repair, lines the outer pair case. The beautiful deep metallic blue of the original blued steel inner dust cap retaining bar, contrasts against the fine gilt of the inner dust cover.

On close examination of the movement, a fine and meticulous finish to all working parts and to the fine decorative embellishment can be seen. The fine piercing and intricate engraving, the beautifully formed square baluster pillars and fine scroll work, all give us some idea as to the immensely high regard and importance in which this eighteenth century technology and craft was held by those engaged in its production. |

The "Fusee" a power maintaining device, with a fine chain running between the conical barrel of the Fusee and the cylindrical barrel of the mainspring was an example of early micro engineering, the chain, similar in construction to a miniature bicycle chain but on a tiny, miniature scale. These incredible chains were made by hand by the young apprentices, as their eyes were sharp and their fingers nimble.

Most importantly the Hallmarks on both the inner and outer cases are completely matching, as is the case makers mark "CH". |
