A Rolex “Red” vintage Submariner. An Oyster Perpetual, Officially Certified Chronometer with date. Model # 1680, C.1971.

The Rolex case serial numbering placing this rare Submariner at exactly the correct period in its production run for this rare red "Submariner" dial configuration.

A rare and fine gentleman’s waterproof vintage Rolex wristwatch in steel, centre seconds, self-winding, water-resistant, stainless steel wristwatch with date and original  stainless steel Rolex “folded link” Flip lock Oyster bracelet. Bracelet Model #  9315. The Rolex Flip lock Oyster bracelet was designed for use by divers. A hinge out link, when deployed, extended the bracelet the required amount to fit over a wetsuit. This Oyster bracelet also incorporated a locking clip to doubly secure the clasp.

Three-body, polished and brushed, screwed-down case back and crown, graduated bi-directional revolving black bezel for the decompression times, Triplock winding crown protected by the crown guard, crystal with cyclops lens.  

The original Black dial in perfect condition, with luminous round, triangular and baton indexes, outer minute/seconds divisions, aperture for the date. Original Luminous steel skeleton hands, again in perfect condition.

The high grade Chronometer movement, fully serviced and in superb condition, running beautifully. Cal. 1575, rhodium-plated, 26 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, monometallic balance adjusted to temperatures and 5 positions, shock absorber, self-compensating free-sprung Breguet balance spring, Micro regulating screws, hack mechanism. Dial, case and movement signed. Diameter: 40 mm. Thickness 14 mm.

This beautiful classic vintage Rolex Submariner, retaining its original “folded link” Oyster flip lock bracelet, Bracelet Model #  9315, in excellent condition.

Many 1680 Submariner’s from this early period had their original  “folded link” Fliplock Oyster bracelets replaced with the later solid link variety, it is very unusual and most fortuitous to find a 1680 Red Submariner with its original “folded link” Fliplock Oyster bracelet and in such superb condition!

One of the most charismatic vintage wristwatches in the world,…  not an overstatement at all, in fact more than justified.

Selected time and again, over many years since its inception, by individual professional divers, professional diving firms and the military, this beautifully engineered robust, iconic and most reliable timepiece still maintains its position as the number one divers watch.

Its rare vintage models acquiring a charisma and desirability the envy of other Marques.

Its choice by British Special Forces and The Royal Marines, confirmed an established and important international status.

Used as knuckle duster by James Bond in one of Ian Fleming’s novels (chapter 16 of On Her Majesty's Secret Service) certainly didn't’ harm its reputation, ironically its fictitious James Bond exploits probably did more to promote the Submariner to a wider public than all of its incredible real life professional diving achievements ever did.

This wonderful vintage Rolex model will continue to be in growing demand by collectors around the world and as fine and rare examples such as this, gradually find their way into private collections, the cost of ownership will without doubt, inevitably rise.
