A fine Art Nouveau, Gold mounted tortoiseshell page turner with bloodstone handle.C.1890. 23cm in length. These beautiful and most elegant implements were used at this period to avoid soiling ones hands or gloves on the un-fixed printing ink used by the late Victorian publishing industry. Page turners were made in a wide range of qualities and materials such as base metal, wood, silver and ivory. This magnificent and rare example, made using tortoiseshell, bloodstone and Gold, is of the very highest quality. For the collector of fine objects, the extraordinary work and design of this fascinating and historic item has resulted in a most delightful and fine work of art. The bloodstone handle is beautifully balanced and skillfully formed by the lapidary with perfect and finely polished facets. The construction of the fine Gold mount is exquisite, in a most beautifully formed and most distinct Art Nouveau style. |
