A fine matching Victorian dipping pen and propelling pencil, made by S. Mordan & Co.in Sterling Silver, C.1880. Of classic plain tapering form with handsome barley sugar grips and ball final. As one might expect in the Victorian period, with the written word the main method of communication, these beautiful writing instruments are not only very elegant and of delightful design, but also of the very highest quality and robustness, constructed as they were, to sustain the rigours of regular daily use.

Both pen & pencil signed,"S.Mordan & Co."(Spare lead is still easily available to fit the pencil and nibs for the pen). The Victorian manufacturer S.Mordan produced a most impressive and quite massive selection of writing instruments, a huge range covering the smallest portable pencil, measuring only an inch or two, right up to very sturdy desk instruments such as in the case of this fine set. Many of the individual "Mordan" desk pens and pencils seen on the antique market today, originally consisted as a set of a "pen and a pencil", sadly most of these have been split up. It is therefore quite rare to find a complete and original set such as this.
