A rare Silver mounted Inkwell,

with a "double sided",

"eight day" Swiss Lever timepiece.

C.1908.

Please quote Stock # 3233.

A most unusual and extremely rare, Edwardian Cut Glass, Sterling Silver mounted Inkwell with a double sided, eight day Swiss Lever timepiece contained within the Inkwell lid.C.1908.

The dial viewed when open with subsidiary seconds, when closed, the dial viewed without subsidiary seconds.

The beautiful and most substantial cut glass base, measuring an impressive 80mm x 80mm x 55mm, with an overall height of 95mm.

The Sterling Silver mounts Hallmarked in the Birmingham Assay Office for the year 1908, and struck with the makers mark for "John Grinsell & Sons Ltd".

Late Victorian and Edwardian timepiece inkwells do appear for sale, however, this particular example is very rare indeed as the timepiece is not only "eight day going", but also "double sided" enabling the time to be viewed with the lid open or closed.

The more conventional type of period timepiece inkwell contains a regular every day pocket watch fitted into the lid, this of course only had the one face and would have a power duration of a maximum of two days.

In this wonderful item the timepiece employed is not an every day pocket watch but a specially made timepiece, designed specifically for its mounting in the lid of this magnificent inkwell.

In addition to the extreme rarity of having two faces, the timepiece has an equally rare feature being that of an "eight day" movement, requiring winding only every eight days.

A rare and important collectors inkwell which would make a most delightful presentation gift.
