A pair of Hoopoe birds with their chick, upon a fruiting bower. C.1860.
A regular technique employed by the Victorian Jewellery manufactures was to overlay the Gold base with Silver in which the Diamonds would be set. The Silver would, over time darken with oxidization, thereby framing the Diamonds with a subtle, muted darker surround, enhancing the appearance of the stones and imparting a particular Victorian "look" which one will only see in this beautiful period Jewellery.
